Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
