Exposing Venezuelan Celebration Footage and AI Images of Maduro.

AI-generated graphics purporting to depict Nicolás Maduro under arrest following his apprehension by the United States have gained countless of views online.

The Way AI Images of the President Emerged Soon After

Initial fake synthetic picture apparently showing him being escorted off a aircraft circulated shortly after. The graphic was unpublished by any authoritative US channels; rather, it was published on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

We’ve checked an AI-watermark detector, confirming the image was generated or edited with AI tools.

Additional AI-generated visuals began to spread in the ensuing hours, purporting to present additional perspectives of Maduro in custody. Discernible logos on these images show they originated from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

AI analysis says these additional images were similarly generated or edited Google AI.

Authentic Image Released but Fabrications Continued

Donald Trump shared the initial authentic image of Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. However, despite this confirmation was made public, synthetic pictures continued to spread but were altered to incorporate the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.

Reverse image searches reveal the new fake images were first posted on TikTok by a graphic design profile. Again, analysis confirms the new graphics were generated or edited AI tools.

Key Points:

  • AI-generated content spread rapidly after the announcement of the president's apprehension.
  • The first fake picture was shared very quickly on social media.
  • Tools like Google’s SynthID helped to identify the pictures as synthetic.
  • Fake images persisted to spread and evolve even after the release of authentic images.
  • The origin of several fabricated images was traced to social media profiles focused on graphic design.
