Over 250 individuals have been taken into custody in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of ongoing federal border security measures, according to authority reports.

Growing Federal Measures

Charlotte marks the latest American city to undergo increased federal involvement, following analogous operations in bigger metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles previously. Federal authorities have claimed that those arrested include individuals with criminal backgrounds and street gang participants.

Regional Objections

However, elected officials and citizens have actively protested the apprehensions, which federal agencies have designated "Operation Charlotte's Web". The state's top elected official has asserted that residents are being targeted based on their skin color.

"We've witnessed covered, heavily armed officers in military-style garb driving non-descript vehicles, focusing on American citizens based on their skin tone, engaging in racial profiling and detaining random people in community locations," commented the top official. "This methodology is not strengthening our security."

Administration Stance

In a recently issued announcement, a federal representative stated that the initiative has resulted in the detention of "some of the most dangerous criminal unauthorized persons", encompassing street gang participants.

Further persons taken into custody had been found guilty for various crimes, including violence toward law enforcement personnel, driving while intoxicated, larceny and manipulating government documents, according to the agency.

The state governor mentioned he's observing information that the operation will expand to Raleigh, another North Carolina urban center, following.
