Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
