The Year 2026 Declared the Age of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. Yet, their prevalence has markedly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this rise, I performed a deep dive into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the wave in gaming seems especially powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs offer inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues facilitate a host of unique mechanics.

Many of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year yet.

When these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
